Reported Speech merupakan cara mengungkapkan apa yang telah orang lain katakan. Logika sederhananya, Anda ingin menyampaikan sesuatu yang telah dikatakan oleh orang lain.
Contoh percakapan singkat berikut mungkin bisa membantu Anda:
- A: Saya ingin makan.
- B: Oiya? Sebentar saya bilang ke C.
B menghampiri C.
- B: A bilang, dia ingin makan. (Reported speech)
- C: Ok, akan saya siapkan.
Itu merupakan salah satu contoh bagaimana reported speech digunakan dalam bahasa Indonesia. Contoh dalam bahasa Inggris adalah sebagai berikut.
- Father: I need a paper.
- Andy: My father said that He needed a paper. (Ayah saya berkata bahwa dia memerlukan sebuah kertas.)
- Child: I will go.
- Arif: Your child said that he would go. (Anakmu berkata bahwa dia akan pergi.)
Perubahan Tenses dalam Reported Speech
Dalam reported speech, ada perubahan tenses lho. Jadi kita tidak hanya menggunakan kalimat biasa dengan hanya mengubah subjek. Coba lihat contoh sebelumnya, ada kalimat I need a paper, kemudian reported speech nya adalah  My father said that He needed a paper, dimana need berubah menjadi needed.

Reported speech juga tidak melulu menggunakan kata-kata said that, sebagai elemen kunci. Anda bisa menggunakan kata lain seperti told me, serta asked me dan wanted to know jika menghadapi kalimat pertanyaan.
